<image:caption>With London based Vagabond being the established roasters of choice, we ordered four flat whites on the naturally processed Brazilian Fazenda Cachoira. With warmth seeping back into our bones we were soon sipping from notneutral mugs with gusto. The first sip brought gentle tastes of apple and vanilla. From our table below the counter we had a good view of the barista at work and had high hopes for our milk and coffee quality. We weren’t let down. Subtle, light and with a full-mouth feel - this is the kind of flat white I could drink day in day out and feel constantly satisfied. The end came around far too quickly and another round was ordered alongside turkish eggs and avocado toasts.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Sending it down and tuning in to Satellite Coffee</image:title>
<image:caption>Beckoned over by the warm golden light coming from within the coffee shop, we shook off our coats and tucked through the door. A cosy contained space lay within, its walls filled with shelves of coffee bags and cups, and plastered with cool colourful prints. Tables were squeezed into corners to maximise the small space, almost all of them filled with people chatting away in french. Established in 2015, Satellite is a hub that celebrates the combination of speciality food and drink with outdoor pursuits- a theme reflected in Morzine as a whole. Filled with mountain bikers and trail runners in the summer and snow-sport lovers in the winter, this small space is buzzy with adventure stories being spilled over a cortado.</image:caption>

Fitting in perfectly with the French charm that’s surround it and yet still setting itself apart as something unique, Satellite is a must-stop spot for outdoor enthusiasts who yearn for a speciality coffee fix. <image:title>Reviews - Revel in the oscillations of coffee at this cosy Speciality Coffee Shop - Coffee Jargon</image:title>
<image:caption>Our coffees came in two ceramic cups of pastel hues. Wooden boards with gently curved edges proved perfect vessels. For the flat white Tom had ordered a double washed Gesha from Quinido, Columbia by A.M.O.C. who are based in Rotterdam. Beautifully made this held a ripe peachy overtone with a subtle lime tanginess lingering on. Having tried A.M.O.C. once before, we loved getting the opportunity to try another of their coffees. As a roasters who give insightful and abundant information on the origins of their beans and the relationships they’ve built with farmers, it’s well worth having a look on their website while you sip their coffee. For the filter we tried Blossoms Sookoo, an 86 hour anaerobic Ethiopian coffee. Honey gold on the pour, this tropical brew held notes of papaya and a pleasant juiciness throughout. Based in Manchester since 2020, Blossom write that they favour ‘sweet, clean and transparent cup profiles’, aligning with our own flavour preferences.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Revel in the oscillations of coffee at this cosy Speciality Coffee Shop</image:title>
<image:caption>Despite our tumultuous entrance, we were met by a serene space, the few tables occupied by lightly chattering people and mellow beats coming from the speakers. Before us was a counter laden down with pastries, where two baristas greeted us and guided our attention to the coffee menu above them. As we shook off our rain jackets and tried to avoid spraying those inside with droplets, I nabbed a seat at the low bench running against the window. Tom ordered, choosing from a lovely array of roasts from Blossom, A.M.O.C and one of our current favourite roasters, Dak. Coffees en route, we watched the sky turn to a bruised shade of purple outside. A contented sense of ease exists in this cosy coffee shop. The lateness of the day meant that the hectic rush hours had long gone, replaced instead with the slow slumbering calm that lurks in the hours before close. The baristas chatted and the people around us idly flicked through copies of Standart, happy to stretch their coffees and hot chocolates a little longer than usual.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Wild Flavours: Why we had to visit this Leicester based coffee shop - Coffee Jargon</image:title>
<image:caption>Passionfruit Co-Fermentation? Take my money. It is fair to say that a fruity coffee is what we favour- those sweet and surpising notes drawing us in, in a way no other type of coffee does. Spotting what the guys at Saints of Mokha had on offer at the festival, we had take a stop and sip. We tried two different Colombian samples, one which was a passionfruit co-fermentation (Brayan Alvear) and the other an award winning naturally processed Pacamara varietal (Jhonathan Gasca). Placing first and second place at the Australian and world barista championships, is there anything more to say about this coffee? Brewed as a pour over, the notes of cherry and raspberry really come through with clarity. The other sample was served up with milk as a flat white, the passionfruit flavour was unlike anything we had tried before. As someone who was trying a co-fermented coffee for the first time, initially I was taken back, unsure what to think. By the second and third sip however we were planning a trip to Leicester. The tartness from the passionfruit could be overwhelming if it didn’t mellow out across the mouth. The sweetness that emerges is nearly identical to the flavour of a yellow starburst.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - A full flavoured coffee wheel at this Speciality Coffee Shop and Roasters. - Coffee Jargon</image:title>
<image:caption>Cartwheel are constantly changing their coffee menu, based on what they’ve been roasting up. The day we visited was hot and in a cycle induced haze we deviated from our usual filter option and went for a Japanese iced brew. Tom has talked about this process in his review on Okende if you’re interested in learning more. We went with an Ethiopian filter, Danche WS which the barista had told us was lovely and fruity. For the flat white we went for the current house espresso, Las Gaviotas, from Columbia. Returning outside to a shaded table, the coffees landed soon after, ice crackling in the cold brew. The filter brew was sweet and refreshing, with notes of raspberry coming across in juicy bursts. Cherry undertones lingered on, creating a deliciously fruity cup. The flat white was light and very delicate. A hint of citrus was balanced out with a nuttier base. It’s a lighter roast than you’ll find elsewhere which sets it aside from high street chains.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - A full flavoured coffee wheel at this Speciality Coffee Shop and Roasters. - Conclusion</image:title>
<image:caption>The coffees we tried and most others roasted and produced by Cartwheel, are named after the farms or cooperatives from which they come. This underscores Cartwheel’s ethos of traceability and encourages you to discover the origins of your coffee. In choosing quality over cost Cartwheel sets a standard that the coffee industry should seek to emulate. With outstanding filter coffee flavours and staff that seek to engage, spend a few hours in Carthweel and feel joyous leaving.</image:caption>

Our barista produces two test tubes filled with coffee beans, and as he begins to grind the contents, he tells us about the process. <image:caption>An interior of exposed brick and warm wooden furnishings welcomes one inside. Since opening back in 2018 Just Between Friends have served up brews with beans sourced from Assembly Coffee Roasters and this roasters still dominates their menu. On our visit a Brazilian natural Mio from Assembly was on offer for the house espresso, alongside a plethora of other Assembly roasts. The baristas were friendly, asking what flavour profiles we usually favoured. Upon their recommendation for our filter on V-60, we opted for a natural Columbian El Vergel, produced by the Bayter Brothers and roasted by Assembly. For the flat white, another Assembly roast, we chose a Tanzanian natural from the Gaia Estate 127/SL28.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From the website it shows that Beacon Coffee supply high quality coffee from established roasters all across the UK including some further afield in mainland Europe. The batch filter coffee was the Beloya, Natural by Edinburgh based, Cairngorm Coffee Roasters. It was an Ethiopian coffee, which we’ve been partial to recently. Served up in a near overflowing mug, the coffee, once cooled, was light and balanced, with a very floral bouquet. A slight acidity hits the back of the mouth in a pleasant fruity manner. For the flat white, we decided on the fruitier flavoured coffee, which was another Ethiopian coffee roasted by Campbell & Syme in Kings Langley near Watford. Originating from Gedeb, the slow dried naturally processed coffee was light and fruity. It had distinct and delicious notes of strawberry, with a full mouth feel.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Coffee Jargon Displayed on neatly presented cards on the countertop are the different espresso and filter options. With two choices on the espresso, the barista explained that as standard one tends to be more chocolatey and the other more funky and fruity. On their drinks menu there was an option we’d never heard of - a “One & One” , which is a split shot served as a single espresso and a single shot flat white. We loved this idea of being able to try the coffee with and without milk. If we had the opportunity we would have definitely tried this on a return trip. However, we are creatures of habit and stuck to our usual choice of one flat white and a filter coffee. We usually prefer a pour over for our filter coffee but on this occasion we decided on a batch brew, a fresh vat being opened before us.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The dynamic coffee menu that Effy has curated is enough to delight any coffee enthusiast. The menu is split into different categories, offering a variety of different levels which are grouped into house, rare, exceptional, competition and world class. While the house coffee has been wonderful on all our visits, Effy’s range offers the opportunity to try high quality coffee at rare affordable rates. This is made possible by a process developed by owner Mitch. When it comes to brewing espresso, the process Effy uses is quite unique. In short, by slowing down the flow rate and increasing the temperature the 20g split shots have allowed the store to offer more high value coffee at competitive prices without compromising extraction.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Threading together innovation, aesthetics and a passion for speciality coffee. - We listened and went with one of the ‘exceptional’ coffees for our pour over - an anaerobic thermal shock Columbian processed coffee Diego Bermundez roasted by Kawa- having expressed our love for a fruitier filter. For our flat white we opted for the house- a Colombian coffee Cocoa Deluxe from People Possession roasters. We headed back outside to sit with our bikes and soak up a little bit of sunshine. The coffees came ensemble. Presented on a small aesthetically pleasing tray with two ceramic cups and glasses of water, the pour over truly was exceptional. As two coffee lovers who are still developing our ability to detect different tasting notes, we were delighted at the clarity of the peach and apricot throughout the drink. Rich and velvety, it reminded us of peaches and cream dessert. The flat white was served up in an acme cup and was accompanied by a mottled teaspoon. The washed anaerobic coffee packed a punch with a full body and notes of cherry leading onto dark chocolate. The milk was incredibly light in texture and had us wishing we’d gotten one each.</image:title>

<image:caption>For the pour over coffee we opted for the feature option which also originated from Brazil. Produced by Amarildo José, the cherries are sun-dried after an extended fermentation process. Neatly served up with an informative card explaining the origin and process of the cherries, the pour over was full of flavour with distinguished notes of apple with dark chocolate coming through and lingering on after we’d finished. With all their coffee verified by “AtSource”, it is clear from their website that The Roasting Room ensure their coffees are of the highest quality and sourced sustainably. Keeping sustainability in mind, all coffee bags are “TUV OK Home Compostable” certified which means the bags can be composted at home, unlike the more widely used coffee bags which often contain plastic that is challenging to recycle. Being so close to the sea their concentration on sustainability stems from witnessing the effects of pollution on beaches.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our first visit to a speciality coffee shop in Cornwall proved to be a success. As we traversed our way along the Cornish coast, we were continually struck by the beauty of the landscape. With the Roasting Room bordering the waves of the sea, it’s no surprise that sustainability is one of their values. This care for the environment was reflected in their sea based graphics and further connected this coffee shop with the landscape around them. With its warm and relaxing interior aesthetic, whether you are coming back from a stint in the water or escaping the busy streets of Newquay, head to The Roasting Room for a well crafted cup of coffee.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We sit at the counter and opt for our usual order of one flat white and one pour over. The shop offers three different coffee choices which includes the house, feature and premium option. Unfortunately upon our visit the premium choice was unavailable. We therefore decided on the house option for the flat white and the feature for the pour over. Being a roaster, all three options are from the Roasting Room. Both coffees were paired with a glass a water which helps experience more flavour by cleansing the palette. This simple addition is a trend we’ve been seeing increasingly and hope seeps into more coffee shops. The house roast was a the naturally processed Single Estate Brazil supplied by Andrea Silva who is part of the Cafe Delas programme. This means the coffee was sourced from 100% female farmers. The perfectly made flat white was well balanced with notes of fudge coming through with each sip.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ordering a flat white and a filter coffee, we opted for two of FCP’s own roasts- Izuba, a Burundi anoxic washed coffee for the flat white and Finca Chelin, a black honey processed Mexican variety for the filter. Anoxic was a word we hadn’t seen much of too date. Our barista explained that it was almost interchangable with anaerobic, meaning that the coffee was fermented in a controlled oxygen free envioronment. He went on to say that coffee jargon is often as much to do with marketing as detailing the product. His taking the time to explain things to us highlighted the accessible nature of coffee that FCP are honing in on. Heading outside, we grabbed the seat by the window, embellished with illustrations by local artist Rosi Tooth, and eagerly awaited our coffees.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - A slam dunk on the coffee front is a sure thing at this Bristol based coffee shop and roastery. - Summary: We left feeling we’d struck gold with our coffee choice while visiting Bristol. Before we departed from the city we stopped by once more to pick up a bag of beans for our aeropress. Asking the baristas which one they’d recommend, they offered up two choices, giving us insights into the unique flavour profiles and processes of each. We opted for Halo Beriti, an Ethiopian natural processed coffee roasted by FCP. The artwork on the bag is a close up shot of the stained glass window. Each coffee features a different section on the bag. ‘We’re really milking it’ the barista told us with a laugh. Brewing up the Ethipian on a rainy campsite in Cheddar Gorge the next morning, a juicy balanced blueberry cup of deliciousness came forth. With a floral aroma and fruity notes lingering on, it further consolidated FCP as one of our favourite coffee shops and roasters. When in Bristol, do yourself a favour and visit this exceptional coffee shop.</image:title>

<image:caption>Our barista was charming and open to answering questions with enthusiasm. She let us know that the first espresso was quite chocolatey while the second had more fruitness and funk. We opted for the funk, or more specifically Swerl Roasters Muryinga Burundi Karamba, made as a flat white. Swerl was a roasters I had seen in speciality coffee shops more and more frequently but had yet to try. For the filter we went for the pour-over option, a Thailand Sirinya Honey by a non profit roasters, Skylark. While our coffee was brewing we had a look at some of the ceramics and learnt a little bit more about Skylark from the barista. A 100% non profit organisation roasting in Devon, they pay their farmers twice the Fair Trade rate and donate all proceeds to charity. With a diverse and experienced team at the helm, they make drinking high quality and unique coffees more achievable for the masses, all while being reassured of the ethical and sustainable origins and practises.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The store offers a range of espresso options along with a batch brew. Though I was understandably tempted by an iced coffee on another balmy day in Mallorca, it had been five days since I’d consumed any sort of caffeine. I therefore decided to order a trusty flat white. At L'epicerie all espresso drinks are made with a Colombian coffee which is roasted by Bay Coffee Roasters in Mallorca. The coffee roaster, which dates back to 1952, was formally known as Cafés Bahía. With the owner and CEO Toni Vallcaneras being passionate about both coffee and cycling, he also funds a cycling project called IB Arabay Cycling. With Mallorca being a renowned cycling hotspot, it seems fitting that L’Epicerie are celebrating a coffee and company that embodies the highlights of this island. The washed processed coffee is grown in the region of Buesaco at 1700 - 1800m The medium-dark roast certainly gave the flat white notes of caramel at the end of each sip with the feeling of a full body. Served in the popular Loveramics cup, the milk wasn’t quite as silky as I normally like but this is a minor detail in what was an all round great cup of coffee. There is a range of different coffees available to purchase and take home. These include coffees from established Madrid based roasters Hola Coffee Roasters and Right Side who are based in Barcelona.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Flat White One aspect of Økende that sets it apart from other coffee shops within Nottingham is the number of pour over options. Økende were offering seven different pour over options all provided by Danish coffee company, La Cabra. Alongside the tempting list of pour over options is of course espresso brewed coffee which is what we decided to choose on our first visit. Ordering a pain au chocolat to accompany two flat whites we sat adjacent to the shelves of fine wines. The flat whites were made using Russilandia, Colombia from La Cabra. The naturally processed coffee was expertly made with silky milk which complemented the rich and complex flavour of Russilandia and for us resembled dark chocolate.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My second visit to Økende was a solo one. During the one week of summer that the UK experienced in the middle of June I headed over in the early hours. This time opting for one of the pour over options. However, being a hot summers morning I decide on trying my first Japanese iced coffee. This type of iced coffee is a much quicker way of creating a delicious cup of iced coffee compared to a cold brew. The Japanese iced coffee involves the coffee directly dripping over ice which instantly reduces the temperature to create a refreshing iced brew within ten minutes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Going down the rabbit hole of speciality coffee and ending up Elsewhere - Coffee Jargon</image:title>
<image:caption>Passion is something that the baristas at Elsewhere are certainly delivering on. Having entered into the large cavernous space, with roasting equipment to the left and the modern clean-cut brew bar to the right, I was greeted and informed about the roasts that were currently in rotation. Daydreamer, their signature house blend, is a Brazilian single origin and has proven popular time and time again. I was tempted however by the special feature coffee Outer World. With beans heralding from Honduras and the barista describing it as complex and fruity, I was sold, and opted for a flat white. A variety of cold brews and filters were also on offer, the menu clear on the wall before me. If one was curious about a brewing method, I reckon Elsewhere would be a good spot to try it out, as the barista’s are approachable and happy to answer any questions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Cloud Picker - the creme of Dublin’s coffee crop. - Coffee Jargon</image:title>
<image:caption>We stick to coffees and our choices are decisive. A cold brew filter for me, made with Fazenda Passeio, a single origin from Brazil. Tom went for a flat white with the washed Ilkito from Ethiopia. The barista details the flavour profiles of the different origins and we head back outside, heads heady with coffee lore. The coffees follow moments later as we’ve luckily arrived in a reprieve from the morning and lunchtime rush. Served in a Kin glassware cup, the ice cubes of the cold brew crackle as it is set down on the table. Tom’s flat white looks to be light in its roast and a smooth pour. We sip. The butterscotch notes carry through in the Brazilian cold brew, leaving a floral finish that lingers without being overly sweet. Balanced and light, it is a refreshing cup without a complex flavour profile. The flat white is indeed a light coffee, with a wash process on the bean allowing for a clean simple flavour. A citrus hint carries through. I could easily have had a second cup of each of the coffees.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - A windswept brew on the seashore of Rhosneigr - Coffee Jargon</image:title>
<image:caption>The four of us were quick to get coffee orders in, opting for a mixture of flat whites and cortados. Like many cafes in North Wales, the speciality coffee roaster of choice was Heartland, a coffee that we were all familiar with. Notos serve the Landmark blend- a mix of Peruvian, Brazilian, Guatemalan and Columbian beans- which I’d tried previously in the roasters itself. On offer was also a Honduras blend and Notos seem to rotate this alternative regularly across different Heartland roasts. Our coffees were served up in beautiful blue ceramic cups made all the more enticing by a velvety looking milk. A first sip confirmed this texture, the recognisable Landmark blend proving smooth and chocolatey with a lingering nuttiness. The coffee was a little more bitter than in the Llandudno roasters and this was more noticeable in the cortado. The milk texture was perfect however, enough so that some people were ordering second rounds after their food.</image:caption>

<image:caption>No Filter sources its beans from 3fe, a popular Dublin Roaster. Espresso drinks are made using their seasonal Momentum Blend which has a mixture of Columbian and Brazilian beans. A guest roast is also on rotation, featuring a Thailand origin anaerobic washed bean at the time of my visit. On my first morning I opted for the recommended momentum blend and sat at one of the few seats placed by a window countertop. My coffee was impressively quick to be called out and I gave it a long pull. Nutty and chocolaty, smooth and well rounded, it was a near perfect cup of coffee. My faith in coffee, and Clonmel, had been duly restored. Later in the week I tried the Thailand bean, which proved much more zesty and lively, and while enjoyable, may be more suited to black coffee beverages.</image:caption>
